Welcome to Insight Improv,
Our Improvisational Theatre Workshop offers sangha members a fun way to grow as a community. It also gives us a chance to expand our mindfulness practice to include the dynamics of stage presence, deep listening, generosity and candid response to the moment.
Class exercises are appropriate for any skill level, so beginners and more advanced improvisors work side-by-side. The results are often hilarious. Our aim, however, is not to learn how to be funny. Instead, we aim simply to tell the truth under imaginary circumstances, to create stories that delight and surprise, and to explore ways improv promotes transformation, collaboration, growth and friendship.
Classes are offered on a dana (generosity) basis, and meet most Saturdays from 10:00am – 1:00pm in the Parish Hall behind Good Shepherd Episcopal Church on 9th at Hearst in Berkeley. Doors and kitchen open at 9:45am.

Our instructor is Mike Dempsey, a sangha member who also co-chairs our Governing Board. Mike brings thirty years’ experience as an improvisor and teacher to the workshop. Mike has performed across the country, including with ImprovBoston (Boston, MA), The Brody Theatre (Portland, OR) and Bay Area Theatresports (San Francisco, CA). He has taught locally at UC Berkeley, St. Mary’s College and the California College of the Arts, and holds an M.A. in Directing and Theatre History from Cal.
Newcomers are welcome as space allows. If you’re interested in joining, or have any questions or concerns, please contact Mike here. He will get back to you with the details you need.
